Learn From Observations
Most players play weekends for fun, exercise and social connection. Players who want to improve should also observe.
I began playing Orlando-area cricket tournaments in 2022. Since then, observation has repeatedly changed my game.
1 — Scoring Areas / Premeditation
In late 2022, I watched an opponent repeatedly clear square leg and fine leg while I kept getting out hitting toward long-on and cow corner. I learned that hard-tennis-ball cricket often rewards hitting square more than straight. This requires premeditation.
2 — Stance
In late 2023, I found that standing taller with little or no knee bend dramatically improved my defense. I became much harder to dismiss.
This remains the most valuable observation of my cricket journey.
3 — Par Score
Over several seasons, I watched scoring patterns across teams, grounds and match times. They gave me a strong intuition for par score—the total associated with roughly a 50% win rate.
